The Hand

Juan Gelman (1930-)
Traducción de Javier Gómez

don't put your hand in the water
it'll go away as a fish/
don't put water in your hand
for the ocean will come
and the shore thereafter/

leave your hand like that/
in the air
in itself/
with no beginning/
nor end

Original:

la mano

no pongas la mano en el agua
porque se irá de pez/
no pongas agua en tu  mano
porque vendrá el océano
y la orilla después/

dejá tu mano así/
en su aire
en ella/
sin comienzo/
ni fin

Medianoche clara

Walt Whitman (1819-1892)

A Clear Midnight

THIS is thy hour O Soul, thy free flight into the wordless,
Away from books, away from art, the day erased, the lesson done,
Thee fully forth emerging, silent, gazing, pondering the themes thou
lovest best.
Night, sleep, and the stars.

Social Poem

Fabián Casas (1965-)
Traducción de Javier Gómez

Seizing the sun in this harsh winter,
the factory workers, in their break,
made a line of yellow helmets
across the street.
Wasn't it for the blond guy scratching his head,
they'd look like a row of pencils
of the same color.

Poema social

Maya Angelou (1928-)
Traducción de Javier Gómez

Muero una vez más.
Las venas colapsan, se abren como
pequeños puños de niños
dormidos.
Memoria de tumbas antiguas,
carne podrida y gusanos
no me hace abandonar
el desafío. Los años
y la derrota fría moran hondo en
las líneas de mi rostro.
Nublan mis ojos y aún
muero otra vez,
porque amo vivir.

The Lesson

I keep on dying again.
Veins collapse, opening like the
Small fists of sleeping
Children.
Memory of old tombs,
Rotting flesh and worms do
Not convince me against
The challenge. The years
And cold defeat live deep in
Lines along my face.
They dull my eyes, yet
I keep on dying,
Because I love to live.

Alone

Oliverio Girondo (1891-1967)
Traducción de Javier Gómez

Alone,
with my skeleton,
my shadow,
my arteries,
like a toad in its hole,
jutting out to summer,
among a thousand insects
that jump,
recoil,
trample each other,
dying;
in a delirious aimless activity,
useless,
willful,
feverish,
just like the fever
suffered by cities.
Alone,
with my window
open to the stars,
among trees and furniture that ignore my existence,
with no desire to leave,
no desire to stay
and live other nights,
here,
or anywhere else,
with the same skeleton,
and the same arteries,
like a toad in its hole
surrounded by insects.

Solo

Solo,
con mi esqueleto,
mi sombra,
mis arterias,
como un sapo en su cueva,
asomado al verano,
entre miles de insectos
que saltan,
retroceden,
se atropellan,
fallecen;
en una delirante actividad sin rumbo,
inútil,
arbitraria,
febril,
idéntica a la fiebre
que sufren las ciudades.
Solo,
con la ventana
abierta a las estrellas,
entre árboles y muebles que ignoran mi existencia,
sin deseos de irme,
ni ganas de quedarme
a vivir otras noches,
aquí,
o en otra parte,
con el mismo esqueleto,
y las mismas arterias,
como un sapo en su cueva
circundado de insectos.

Una chica

Ezra Pound (1885-1972)
Traducción de Javier Gómez

El árbol entró en mis manos,
La savia trepó a mis brazos,
El árbol creció en mi pecho...
Desciende,
Las ramas salen de mí, como brazos.

Árbol eres,
Musgo eres,
Eres violetas bajo el viento.
Una niña eres, tan lejana.
Y es absurdo para el mundo.

A Girl

The tree has entered my hands,
The sap has ascended my arms,
The tree has grown in my breast -
Downward,
The branches grow out of me, like arms.

Tree you are,
Moss you are,
You are violets with wind above them.
A child - so high - you are,
And all this is folly to the world.

Salvation

Alejandra Pizarnik (1936-1972)
Traducción de Javier Gómez

The island elopes.
And again the girl climbs the wind
and reveals the death of the prophet bird.
Now
she's the yielding fire.
Now
she's the flesh
...the blade
...the stone
lost in the fountain of affliction
as a seafarer in the horror of civilization
that purifies dusk.
Now
the girl finds the mask of infinity
and shatters the wall of poetry.

Original:

Ahora
la muchacha halla la máscara del infinito
y rompe el muro de la poesía.
